If that laptop is as old as I think it is (P120 or so), then it might be that the kernel pcmcia support doesn't work for it. I have a Toughbook P150 and I have to use the pcmcia sources from pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net (means disabling the kernel pcmcia stuff) to get it to work.
