ok, in case anyone is interested;  i was able to get my hp photosmart 
1115 to finally print out at the 1200 x 2400 enhanced mode in kde under 
the regular print config gui. but the gimp would still not recognize it 
past 600 x 600.
after googling it for awhile and reading other's misfortunes with 
attempts; i took an anonymous advisors idea to print the photos from 
open office draw. :-)  perfect resolution AND the program has even more 
stuff to do with letters, shapes etc to add in.
now i am m$ free from beginning to end in photo work ! yeah!
