Gentoo is one kick-ass distribution because it lets you compile
everything for your particular setup.  I have it installed on a Sun
Ultra 5 workstation, a Sun Ultra 30 workstation, a Sun Ultra 60
workstation and a few intel boxes here and there.  

I will admit, the install can be daunting unless you have some
substantial linux knowledge going in, but once it's installed it's pure
heaven.  'emerge sync && emerge -u world' is a nice way to stay
current.  Debian has this functionality as well of course, and you may
be better off trying Debian first.
