As a sidebar on Michael's thoughts, would it be reasonable (during the install process) to have the newbie beat the keys (and control the mouse) while the installer watched on his/her shoulder explaining the choices (options) and guiding the process. Would this help instill confidence in the newbie??? If this is how installs happen at an InstallFest, please recognize that I have never experienced that part of an InstallFest and ignore this post.
