Look at your Exim logs -- maybe at /var/log/exim/{main,panic,reject}log.

What do they tell you?

What version of Exim?

Probably old if Debian, so try:

 exim -bt -d11 email@you-are-trying

Or

 exim -d11 -bh ip.of.remote.host
