Most of your issues seem to have been addressed. The hang is probably the infamous sendmail hang. Disable sendmail from your SysV startup scripts (/etc/rc.d/rc3.d and rc5.d) and see if that helps. If not, there should be a message on the screen telling you what is hanging.
