George, I am working on installing Debian on an old 486 laptop and I remembered your email from August. I just looked through the Linux Journal archives, and I cannot find any article that matches your description below. I checked July, August, September and October issues and no luck. There was an article in the August issue about a guy who attached his wife's DOS 386 to his LInux box - was that the article you meant? Thanks!
