Learning to trace and handle dependencies can be a little daunting at first, but it's like falling off a bike. If you're working from source, check the READMEs for required package references. If you're working from RPM, check the docs for the relevent package and see what it requires. If you're using debian, well, we wouldn't be having this discussion, now, would we? =) It just takes a little bit of legwork and preparation, and holding your system's hand as you casually bludgeon new libraries into place.
