Leave off the -u and you will get what you're looking for.  The message you
got is actually the man command telling you that -u isn't an option to man,
and then giving you the syntax of the man command.  You just type "man
up2date" to view the manpage for up2date.  Your question about what the -u
option to up2date does will be answered therein.
