Now the icons etc are OK and the NIC is fine. Still having problems with the sound. I ran sndconfig and it seemed to be working. I could hear the sample sound. Sound is enabled from the preferences/sound menu. When I run the sound card detection from the system menu nothing is found. The hardware browser finds the sound card with no problem.
