Hello all: I've been an independent consultant for seven years now-- what that actually means is that I'm a contractor, but I don't go through the body shops because I have my own corporation. Anyway, I've always thought about looking for work on more of a project basis, but I don't have a list of people who'd be willing to help. So I was wondering, how many of you plug folks (a) are professional developers, preferably C/C++ and/or SQL or other DBMS (b) still reside in the Phoenix area and (c) would be interest in doing subcontract work? (in Linux, of course) I have nothing lined up at the moment, but I've realized that in these lean economic times, I have to make my own work, unless I'm willing to take whatever a recruiter feels like handing me. I'm not looking for any commitments, just a rough idea of what the interest would be within PLUG or elsewhere. Also, I'm not interested in making big bucks off other peoples' work, I'd just like to be able to tackle something a little more challenging than doing work by the hour. And yes, I have done flat-rate projects, too (as an individual contracting for someone else), so I have a reasonable acquaintance with work statements, milestones, and the like. One thing I've noticed is how many small businesses have networked computer systems these days, and I was wondering how many of them would be interested in saving money by using Linux servers rather than NT. We could use Samba, of course, so they wouldn't have to wean their clerks off Windows. (This is about the full extent of my "market research" so far.) I'd greatly appreciate any feedback or comments.
