I've been talking with Victor Odhner a little bit about this subject, but
this is what I would like to do:
1. Get Linux set-up and running.
2. Get Apache up and running.
3. lastly and least important is getting some sort of FTP server up and running also.
I could really use some help getting this done, I have tried setting up Linux once or twice before but had all kinds of problems and ended up going back to Windows 2000 server - dito with Apache.
Now I don't have a problem with bringing the computer to one of the install fests depending on timming, and any advance advice you all could offer I'm open to it.
Victor had suggested that I set aside a partition and getinto dual-boot mode.
I can repartition my drive do this, but need to find out something first. I can make another partition on the drive which is a 20gig drive. What I need to know after making a new partition, I am going to guess it can be set-up to dual boot
when install Linux even though Win2000 is already installed and running?
Second setting up Apache. Victor suggested I learn as much as I can about it about it, no problem what is the best way to do so?
and Lastly I want some sort of FTP server, it is for my use and the use of a few friends and family members only. Which I know can be an easy way for a hacker to gain access Victor suggested changing to ssh and scp instead of ftp. What are they and where can I find out some information about them?
Just a little back ground about me so you have an idea of what I know, I am a programmer (been doing it sence 99) after spending 20 years in the military. Right now I am the entire IT dept. at the small company I work for I take can of the network, all hardware (building new systems and fixing them) upgrading hardware and software.. I also have taken a course on PC repair. However I don't have any training in Linux (we only had on class in UNIX in school)
so I will need a fair amount of help at first.
The system I am using is my old computer and it's running a PIII 800 w/256megs RAM and 20gig hard drive, so it will handle whatever.
I'll be looking forward to your suggestions and help.
Thanks
