You handled the chimp all wrong. Here's how it should have gone: Me: Your network just died. Chimp: Did you try restarting Windows? Me: I can traceroute off my LAN. And I'm running Linux. Chimp: OK, shut down all your programs and restart Windows. Me: [types: aplay /tmp/windows_sd.wav] OK. Chimp: Now start up your computer. Me: [types: aplay /tmp/windows_su.wav] OK. Chimp: Now go to our speed test site. Me: OK. Chimp: What does it say? Me: It says "The web site cannot be found" : ; : You get the idea. Been there, done that. My favorite was when their primary and secondary DNS died. I called them an told them about it. The chimp took the message and promised someone would get back to me. Sure enough, this kind old lady called me up to tell me that if the first name server failed, it would roll over to the second. I explained that that one had failed, too. She said she would get back to me. She didn't. I set up my own DNS and forwarded to Qwest's dialup nameservers (not the VDSL nameservers). A week later, I checked their VDSL name servers - they were still dead. As bad as Qwest is, I found one company worse - BellSouth.
