I hereby predict that they do . . . now!

Note that I don't have the required version of Windows XP, haven't used this 
"PowerToy", and it is limited to four desktops (plenty for me).

However, there have been shareware applications that provided this same 
functionality in all versions since Windows 95 for years.

Note that Windows XP also includes a couple features that don't come 
standard on Linux:

1) The ability to change graphical users (locally) without logging the 
original user out.  Note that this is mainly for the purposes of not having 
to reconfigure the desktop, launch applications, and so on when logging 
back in.  KDE has been trying to accomplish similar functionality with the 
"Restore on Login" option, but it only works to a limited extent in non-KDE 
programs.

2) The ability to have the various virtual desktops work at different 
resolutions.  Note that I know someone who has tried this, and it was 
extremely "buggy" for him, but it did work.

Basically, the point of this message is that Microsoft has not been idle.  
On the other hand, neither have the excellent free software developers (or 
Apple for that matter).  The proverbial race seems to be on! ;-)
