When I use my Win98SE Box, I have been quite satified with: Opera 6 Forte Agent 1.8 NewsReader Eudora 4.2 Email What I like best about these Windows apps is that each of their functionally closely resembles a Linux counterpart. Opera 6 (beta) is available for Linux. PAN looks and operates very much like Agent. Kmail is very similar to Eudora (the configuration screens are virtually identical) Using this setup I can boot either OS and have virtually the same applications in either environment. These apps are no more difficult for a newbie to learn than the MS offerings. Additionally, each of these apps offer far more customization, features, and control than their MS counterparts. Most importantly, I can avoid the MS security du jour issues. Each of these apps offer a free version which may have limited functionality, but may also suit your needs. Hope this is helpful.
