I also have told a client that I am perfectly willing to do exactly this setup for him - the entire domain (and a couple of other minimal virtual domains) are presently being serviced by sendmail/uw-imap = even though they have purchased SBOS on 3 separate Gateway servers at 3 different locations and I will not allow them to be exposed to the internet in any way. More to the point, I suppose that it's necessary to counter the negative advice you offerred because indeed, I have had several instances where I have used a mixture of open source and closed source mta's and when I get them configured properly they work and in fact, have been quite complimentary.
