Sean, If I remember correctly, this problem is usually due to not having the cdrom driver loaded. If it's a standard ATAPI IDE CDROM, try loading the cdrom.o driver. It will be located in your /lib/modules/(kernel version)/drivers/cdrom/ directory. Load this module with insmod and try and mount your the cd.
