I can only speak from personal experience, but red carpet trashed the snot 
out of my rpm database.  (ie: now if I try to use rpms not from redcarpet 
evil things happen)  I have since just started using source anyhow (since 
im on red hat 6.2 on my last rh machine, and all new rpms have evil gcc 
dependencies as they are created on 7.x machines)

I havent looked at in about 3 months, but it was getting much more stable, 
however, I dont think you could call it fast.  It was decent if you had 
128mb or more of RAM if you had 64mb or under it was nearly unusable.  
However, sadly that is the case for most gnome things nowadays so probably 
doesnt need to be said.
