Under the assumption that in both configurations you're running the same hardware/sofware/daemons/everything except for reiserfs, then I would suggest running a memory checker. I have worked with a box that was doing something similar to what you described here with ext2 and reiser, and it turned out to be bad ram. I have also heard rumors of boxen that work fine with reiser but puke with ext2 also due to bad ram.
