I had that same problem and I found it was because the default LILO uses the LBA32 option and my BIOS does not support that. In /etc/lilo.conf, comment out the line "lba32", put in a line that simply reads "linear". Run LILO and try to boot again. Keep your boot floppy handy, just in case! -Pete-
