Try doing "apt-get install task-x-window-system", if nothing is to be installed, you may want to just purge your cofiguration with something like "export COLUMNS=500; dpkg -l | grep X | awk '{print $2}' | xargs dpkg --purge" I haven't tested that but it should work, do it without the "dpkg --purge" command to make sure it's only removing what you want. Sometimes it's just easier to start from scratch, especially when you have apt to do your configuration for you. Note that anything that depends on X-Windows will be removed too, so this may not be an option. If this is the case, make sure the "misc" fonts are in your XF86Config-4 file, and make sure that you actually have the fonts packages installed. Doing a dpkg-reconfigure on the fonts packages (if they are installed) may help in this case. * Blake -----Original Message----- From: Chris Cowan [mailto:chris@ctprm.com] Sent: Friday, July 27, 2001 2:25 PM To: plug-discuss@lists.PLUG.phoenix.az.us Subject: need Debian help I'm trying to get debian install... i'm running into problems with the xserver everytime I go to start it, i get the Fatal server error: could not open default font 'fixed' and suggestions would be totally appreciated... chris ________________________________________________ See http://PLUG.phoenix.az.us/navigator-mail.shtml if your mail doesn't post to the list quickly and you use Netscape to write mail.
