If you want SAMBA to act as a PDC for a domain in which Windows 2000 machines will take part, you have to be running v2.2.1a+ or Samba-TNG. If you are just doing a simple workgroup then you can use 2.0.7, if you are going to have anything besides 2000/NT4 machines authenticating you have to be using plain-text passwords. For the most part the Samba HOWTO's are all done quite well, you can find them and the FAQs (very helpful as well) on www.samba.org We are running Samba-TNG with LDAP as the back-end and with windows 2000 clients joined to the samba PDC. There were a few ritualistic sacrifices and fits of spastic voodoo spell casting involved to get it working. But it does work. :) Blake Barnett Sr. Unix Administrator DevelopOnline -----Original Message----- From: Eric Van Buskirk [mailto:yonica@qwest.net] Sent: Friday, July 27, 2001 9:33 AM To: Plug-Discuss Subject: samba prob Hi, I have installed samba 2.0.7-36 on a RH 7.1 machine. And I have a Solaris 8 machine, and a Windows 2000 server machine as well. I am first trying to get the w2k box and samba to interact, but i am having a lot of difficulty and am not sure why. i was wondering if anyone could tell me whether they have successfully set up a basic samba configuration with w2k, and if so whether they had to do anything special to get it to work? for instance, did you find that a certain service pack would not work? did you find that encrypted passwords/plain text passwords would not work? were any special adjustments necessary to the smb.conf file? if you got your configuration to work without any special hassle, that would be useful information to me as well? thanks so much, eric by the way, maybe i could include my error log if anyone wants to take a look?
