It is redundant, but perhaps easier? That way you wouldn't have to fill your mailbox with messages and didn't Linus start by posting to some newsgroup alt.os.linux anyway. Perhaps a news server would be better than a mailing list? It's just difficult to subscribe to a large number of mailing lists, while it seems easier to peruse a large number of newsgroups...
