My box locked up recently due to what I believe to be three things: 1. xlock keeping CPU usage high 2. dust on the fansink. a LOT of dust. 3. the homeowner being somewhat cheap, always sets the AC up to 76 (I like 74). I think he overtwisted it cause it was on 80 that day. I screwed with it for 15 minutes before I powered it down. Then looked at the fansink. It was nasty enough that I feel heat was responsible even tho the box isnt overclocked... :) Gary Nichols wrote: > I have only seen linux boxen 'lock up' because of a hardware problem, > a race condition (like a custom compile of X - don't ask), etc. You > might want to write some logging scripts, throw your daemons into > debug mode, etc to catch what's causing your box to lock up. > > I've seen other linux admins completely lose their minds when their > boxes lock up because they NEVER lock up. > > Most of the NT guys I know flip the reset switch and go back to > reading slashdot without losing a beat. :-) Ok, that was a cheap > shot.
