Mandrake 8.0 is decent imo. We use it here in the office as a Samba machine and it's been almost reliable. So far in 3 weeks it has hard-locked up twice, so it's definitely doing better than Windows* could ever hope to. I personally dislike it because 1) it's install is very dumbed down and not as detailed as I would like, 2) it is not Debian;) , and 3) a basic default install of it has locked up 3 times on a machine that otherwise doesn't lock up. By far, I have had the most luck with Debian (just upg'd to 2.2r3, 2.4.5) in stability, security, and tolerability. In further response to what you said about Redhat, buggy Redhat distributions ceased to surprise me after 5.2 or so. Tell me if I'm crazy, or is it normal for Linux distributions these days to ship with older KDE (this came with 1.1.2) and old buggy linux kernels (2.2.16). linux-2.2.16 seems to have some odd bug with the 3c57x controller. Weird messages appear in syslog such as "eth0: transmit timed out", and various other Tx/Rx errors. It surprises me that Redhat ships with this kernel. I'm new to the list so I was wondering what the general concensus is with Mandrake 8.0. My morning rant :) ->L + --_____________________________________________________________________-- + | | Lane Davis No man is an island, but if you take a bunch | | | | of dead guys and tie them together, they make | | | | Phone: 602-722-1200 a pretty good raft. | | + --_____________________________________________________________________-- + ________________________________________________ See http://PLUG.phoenix.az.us/navigator-mail.shtml if your mail doesn't post to the list quickly and you use Netscape to write mail.
