Hokeydoke.  From a DOS prompt I did:

C:\> md linux
C:\> xcopy d:\dosutils\*.* c:\linux\*.* /s

rebooted, sans satanic GUI and:

C:\> cd linux
C:\> autoboot

Worked like a champ. Do yours look like these?
