ok,
found a couple of problems after installing mandrake 7.2

I. when initializing the system, only root has sound from the audio device
   (in any desktop manager) and you have to add your usergroup to the
   audio group

II. upon the above, attempting to start KDE as a USER results is total
    system freezeout requiring reset (definitely NOT GOOD)
    GNOME doesn't appear to suffer this problem.

btw, aren't all local users on the box supposedto have rw privs to /dev/dsp?
