Upgrade will not delete any existing partitions. HOWEVER (assuming that you prefer new install to an 'upgrade') 1 - reformatting ensures that junk isn't left over. 2 - if you can normally boot to linux - do so, type df and note which path belongs to each partition so it will be easy to decide which ones you can reformat - i.e. /home, /var & /opt - if they are separate partitions, you might skip the reformatting to presever the data.
