In this case as root 1. adduser audio So the steps for /dev/ttyS0 (if this device is your scanner) as root. 1. if group has no permissions chmod g+rw /dev/ttyS0 2. addgroup scanner 3. chgrp scanner /dev/ttyS0 4. adduser scanner Hope this helps, Eric :-)
