Problem here is that you end up with something on your police record. Also if they can find some loophole about maybe you ditched the item, but somebody claims they saw you take something, then they might use that to search your house and steal all of your equipment. This is a good reason to have offsite backups that aren't well-known, so they can't go grab those ;-).
