Ive eliminated almost all spam to my inbox with a few (20? 30?) simple
Netscape Mail filters... granted, it still shows its ugly head in the
trash folder instead, but this gives me the option of reviewing spams
by subject line if I feel so inclined, before I end their existance...

the ***best*** one is to eliminate any email that doesnt contain
either your name or your email address in a To: folder. Just be sure
to do this AFTER you have already sorted your mailing list mail into
the mailing list folders, or it gets hosed to...
