If it understands the standard environmental variables:

export http_proxy="http://[PROXYNAME]:[PORT]"
export ftp_proxy="http://[PROXYNAME]:[PORT]"

used by (X)Emacs, Lynx and Mosaic ( remember that? )
it should be ok.
