I just fought a similiar fight on this.
Use your ISP's DNS servers in your resolv.conf file.
The NIC that points out to the internet is looking for
resolution either locally or in that direction. 

Also, make sure you have the entry:
    hosts: files dns
in your /etc/nsswitch.conf file.
