Yes I'm familiar with the LFS web site and HOWTO.  As the LFSMake web
page and Makefile both state, what I've done is in part an automation
of procedures from the LFS book.

The LFS group is also starting an automation project, "ALFS".  They want
to use XML and create their own programming interfaces.
