I gave up on the Trio 3D a while back, too many problems. Dunno about the modem, check http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html. OSSFree support for SB Live is questionable, ALSA is better. From what you're describing there may also be a hardware failure somewhere, and if you ever get things running you should do a few kernel compiles to wring it out.
