Last night at the meeting, someone asked about the escape character (\) in a
bash command/script.  The best docimentation that I have found on the net about
bash is at http://www.gnu.org/manual/bash/html_chapter/bashref_toc.html. 
To whoever asked (sorry, without name tags, I tend to forget names) you can
find out all about the escape character and bash expansion here.
