90% of all applications released now use the standard automake "configure"
scripts for detection of dependencies and will let you know if you don't
have it in the first ten seconds, and almost always let you know where to
find it.  All of these package management tools are fine for convenience and
people who just don't have a clue.  But if you are in a LUG, you've
obviously gone a bit deeper than just the average newbie.  Besides, if you
really WANT to learn linux, I can't think of a better way to get your hands
dirty and REALLY LEARN it.

Part of the value of linux to me is as a home unix platform that I can use
to interact with other unix platforms, and rpm/deb etc aren't available
anywhere else.  When the day comes that ALL platforms have a unified package
system, I'll jump on the bandwagon.

The two main reasons I cut over to RH was that it managed dependencies
and came with an 'uninstall' option.  

I don't want to spend out hours figuring out from reading some
obscured documentation on some software that it depends on
ncurses-9.9-alpha.

And at the same time, if I want it to go away, what are the chances
the author has arranged it so that there is an 'uninstall' target in
the Makefile?

Plus, watching X rebuild from source has to be about as fun as running
fingers through a tablesaw, and I've done that.  [Not recommended for
home viewers.]
