Joel , Just thought that i would let you know an even easier more secure way to accomplish the same task. I have been using VNC which is a cross platfrom pcanywhere on my window's box at home ..from my linux box at work for a couple months now ... until i got my linux ipchains firewall/NAT up ..then i got concerned about security ... so i looked into tunneling VNC over SSH ... it's really easy .. it's FREE ...which you just can't beat. So the skinny on how i did it ... for anyone out there trying to accomplish this task .. 1. If you are on a linux box at work (which i hope you are all on :) go to www.freshmeat.net and search VNC .. get the VNC for windows part on yoru windows box installed as a service. 2. get the linux piece and install it ... install SSH .. (we want to encrypt it ) since you know that PCAnywhere is both expensive buggy and very insecure :) 3. From your linux box ssh to your firewall .. then run the vncviewer from your linux box ... bam !.. you have a remove window secured via ssh and it's FREE !!.. and no more port forewarding ... If you have any questions or you do something even cooler .... please let me know Chad Cranston Network Admin ccranston@vistavdi.com From " linuxnet"@home.com Thu Jun 29 03:00:17 2000 From: " linuxnet"@home.com (colin rasor) Date: Wed, 28 Jun 2000 20:00:17 -0700 Subject: sheilded Cat-5 References: <010101bfe171$3542af60$0178a8c0@desertraven.com> Message-ID: <395ABBC1.54F05B3E@home.com> This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------A3CFF99CB8073582C821BDFD Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="------------741315B6B45E47DBE873E4CB" --------------741315B6B45E47DBE873E4CB Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Thanks Mike The wire is going in a machine shop.  The wire is going in a machine shop.

As far as shielded Cat-5? I've never seen such a thing. There was a shielded
twisted pair that IBM used for token-ring, but that's Cat-4. Cat-4 is NOT
rated for 100mbps

Shielded Pros: Less outside interference in extremely noisy (electrical)
areas.

Unshielded Pros: 100mbps, much cheaper, resistant to electrical noise in all
but the worst environments when properly installed.

Use Cat-5 unless you're wiring a machine shop. If you're wiring a machine
shop, run Cat-5 in metal conduit.

 Hello everybody,
I was wondering the best place to buy shielded cat5 non twisted. I am
looking for around 2000ft.
What are the pros to using shielded compared to non shielded?
