Spruce is pretty good, but all the gnome/gtk based clients are in the "it'll be great in six months" catagory. Balsa is good, but requires the gnome address book. I use icewm and do not want all of gnome installed. Spruce is actually a gtk program that does not need gnome. About the only thing that annoys me about spruce is that there is no indicator (whether text color or icon) that indicates whether a message has been read or not. I have played with most of the mail packages available, and I prefer spruce, but if you are already using gnome, also look at balsa.
