The Regional Information Technology Association, a student club at Glendale Community College, held it's first Social Computing night on Friday, 25 February, 2000. Perhaps ten students showed up. Most played games on a stand-alone LAN, and one student got Redhat loaded onto one of the old x486 machines that we are trying to rehabilitate. It even ran GNOME and KDE on 0.5Gbytes and 32Mbytes. Next week we will rehab another machine and start working on a Linux LAN. Computer night is only open to GCC students. (It costs $24.00 to get lab privileges, or if you register for an hour of credit you get lab privileges included with your $40.00 per credit hour fee.) However, I'm trying to get space on Tuesday evenings from about 5:30 to 8:30 for Linux lab time. If it pans out then everyone would be welcome. (Call GCC Student Life if you want to lobby, express interest, etc.) The whole thing is a shoe-string operation. RITA is part of the Maricopa County Community College District, so all donations are tax deductible. Our priority right now is a Club file server for Computer Night, and CD-ROMs for the x486 re-hab project.
