Thanks for the info guys, but I found one that works EXACTLY the way I
want to- it's simply called convert. It will convert images of one of
the types listed in its manpage to another one(also listed in its
manpage). Works for me, thought I'd share the wealth...

Still looking for a good editor though. Didn't someone proclaim fondness
for something called Lynx?
