thanks, buddy. I already have the laptop with Windows 10 (I think) so I'm good where that is concerned. Which quickbooks do you guys think I should use for bookkeeping. is self-employed good enough?

On Wed, Sep 18, 2024 at 10:54 AM Keith Smith via PLUG-discuss <plug-discuss@lists.phxlinux.org> wrote:

Hi Michael,

Sounds like a good idea. I recently saw and ad that said bookkeepers
are in demand. Keep in mind it was a advertisement.

If you want to do this I would consider Quickbooks so you can exchange
data with your customers.

I used the search phrase "does intuit offer free training in quickbooks"
on Google and it returned:

---
QuickBooks Online Certification trainings and exams are free to
accounting pros and available in QuickBooks Online Accountant. Gain
skills to better service your clients while earning credentials that
keep your practice growing.
There was this link directly below :

The Google query "Can QuickBooks be self taught?" returned a bunch of
info such as:

---
Yes, you absolutely can. You'll lose access to Live QuickBooks Help and
Instructor-led classes, but you'll keep lifetime access to ALL 60+
self-paced classes for LIFE. That includes all class updates
- we update classes when QuickBooks changes
- and any new self-paced classes we add.
---

I would recommend you put together a business plan that includes what it
will take to run Windows and pay for the Intuit training.
This will help in your decision making. This should include a marking
plan - how are you going to acquire customers.

I run Win 10 because my video editing software is Windows only.

I have an old laptop that runs windows. I bought it new maybe 8 years
ago and have kept it in good condition. I assume something like this
might work. My battery is still good so I am thinking this laptop might
be worth $100 - $200.

Another option is to load VirtualBox on your Linux box and create a
Windows guest configured for your needs.

The laptop I mentioned has 2 core/4 thread CPU which I upgraded from 8G
of RAM to 16G of RAM. I've evaluated it a lot and it never utilized
more than 8GB of RAM and the CPU often spikes to 100% and then goes down
to 60 to 70%. I think this means if I had a more powerful CPU it might
use more RAM.

Based on my experience your Windows configuration will need 8GB of RAM
to run windows and Quickbooks. Browsers hog RAM so keep that in mind.

I'm excited for you Michael
