Thank you very much. This is exactly what was going on. I should have figured this out on my own, the big clue being the desktop background showing up on the TV screen. For some reason I was expecting the TV display to be a duplication of the laptop display, not an extension of it. I d on't know why I thought that since Windows doesn't work that way either.

Just try and drag a windows to each edge of the screen and see if it moves over to the TV.
I'm guessing you are running KDE because I believe Unity puts a menu bar on every screen, like it or not (I'm firmly in the not category). If you are and you would like your screens to show the same thing go to System Settings -> Display and monitor. Then make sure the "Display Configuration" section is selected. You should be seeing rectangles that represent your monitors. Simply drag one of the monitors on top of the other. You might need to change the resolution of one of the display so that they match.

Alternatively you can just start a movie and drag the movie's window onto the empty desktop and then make it full screen. This is my preferred method for watching movies via laptop while on the road.
Hi Everyone!

I have Mint 17 loaded on my HP Pavillion dv7 (1273d) and this is the
first time I've taken it out on the road. I'm in a hotel and want to
watch a dvd movie that will play on my laptop on the nice HDTV in my
hotel. I hooked the HDMI cable from my computer to the TV and switched
the TV output to the correct setting. The desktop background shows up on
the TV but nothing else does, no taskbar, no icons, no mouse pointer.
Just the background. It seems like this should be something easy but I
can't figure out what it is.

I went into the display setting thinking my issue might be there. The TV
I'm plugged into shows up there but that's it. I've tried googling for
an answer but I don't seem to be able to phrase my request properly
because I keep getting responses for no sound.

Anyway, any help you give will be appreciated. Thank you.

Fred
