boot live media- data on ssd

once long ago (back in the early 2000s) I was hanging out with a guy who
would boot from a knoppix cd and then use his hdd as his data drive. Well,
I am having problems. My / directory is constantly corrupting so I am
thinking I would do the same thing with mint. How do I do it, please?
