unusual file copy problem

A few questions here:
1. Are they “running instances” of an OS?
2. If so, can you use SSH/SCP between them
3. Any other networked application (console type) like RSync or similar that can be used?

Otherwise, unless you have root access to the original image, I am not sure what else you can do.
