thanks Matt.  You post as I was typing.
Hows this according to the page you sent and the instructions you sent and
throwing a character from the instructions I found:

for FILE in *.jpg ; do
   NEWFILE=`echo "$FILE" | sed -e 's/.jpg$/_resized.jpg/'`
   convert '*.jpg[1600x0]' *.jpg
   done
