Thank you to all who responded. This evening I downloaded and installed 
handbrake. So far I'm very happy with it. It takes 30 minutes to 
transcode a file the windoze app I was using needed about 45 minutes to 
transcode. Also the files done by handbrake look just as good if not better.

It amazes me how the free stuff that's available to linux users works 
better than the equivalent software the windoze users pay big dollars, 
pounds, euros, yen, etc for. I wonder how much of that is due to the 
buggy OSs the other software runs on top of.
