Hard Drive Recovery

Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't... 

I have 'waken up' unresponsive HD by gently tapping them sideways.
It seems like the arm 'sticks', and I just bump them vertically against a 
surface and SOMETIMES work...
Sometimes.
