Google Market offered apps. Google Play adds the ability to rent and purchase music, movies, video and other media along with the apps.

So, a new name.

Guess it's Google learning from KDE, specifically Aaron Seigo's Make Play
Live project :).

Ha, the help center article Google points to doesn't exist.
