Good point...  And you are right in a way, but not completely.

You basically have four (actually three) different programming 
methodologies:

1) Scripting - This will be languages like Bash but advanced scripting 
can be accomplished with Perl, Python, and Ruby
Scripting languages are all about accomplishing a single task and 
ending.  Programs should never be persistantly running with one (IMHO) 
and only one exception, services.  These are designed to generally use a 
series of utilities, and accomplish a "task" then end.  Sometimes that 
task is to get a service running, in which case it may stay running to 
wait for the service to end, then clean up.  But that is the only time a 
script should really stay running.  A perfect place for scripts are 
command line programs, and cron jobs.  Many people would combine 
Procedural and Scripting as the same thing.  To me they are different 
due to how they are used, and the techniques you use would therefore change.

2) Procedural - C/Perl/PHP
Procedural programming you teach the system what needs done.  It is like 
writing a how to manual.  Do this, then this, then that.  Common steps 
are often placed into separate packages called function or procedures 
depending on the language (some often say functions return values, 
procedures do not, and as a general rule, this is true, but some 
languages don't follow that convention).  Learning to program in any 
procedural language will help you to transfer your skills to almost any 
other procedural language.  The steps will be the same, only they syntax 
will change.

3) Object Oriented - Python/Ruby/C++/Java/Mono
OO languages are not that much different from procedural ones, and yet, 
nothing like them.  Mostly the changes are in the techniques used rather 
than the actual language changes.  But, there are some very fundamental 
differences.  Security procedures that allow you to hide and protect 
code is very different between the languages.  For anyone wanting to 
discuss how Python is Object Oriented this is where I will kill you.  In 
a true OO language, code should scope and be internal to the class, 
never external.  I included Python here not because I believe its a 
great OO language (I don't think it is, but it is a fantastic scripting 
language), but because the techniques used are very OO based.  If you 
are not familiar with Object Orientation as a separate subject, I would 
suggest learning that.  Then using a strong OO language like Java or 
Ruby to learn how to implement what you learned.  To move from one OO 
language to another, as long as you know good proper OO techniques, you 
will be better off re-applying your OO knowledge into that other 
language rather than try and reapply what you know from your other language.

4) Functional - XQuery
Functional is the new kid on the block.  I am still getting tripped by 
this one, so maybe somebody else on this list can better explain it.  My 
experience with it reminded me more of a disected procedural language 
with objects to make things easier.  But like I said, I get slapped 
around by functional programming every time I go near it... I probably 
don't know it near well enough to comment on it.
